Merseyside father loses six stone* after being too overweight for theme park ride

In 2012, whilst on holiday in Florida, 44 year-old Brendan Thomas visited Universal Studios with his family. But when he attempted to go on the new Harry Potter ride, Brendan was unable to ride due to his weight. This proved to be the tipping point for him, and his embarrassment at being unable to go on the ride motivated him to make a change and join BMF at his local park in Birkenhead. Since joining, Brendan, from the Wirral, has dropped from 23 stone to 17 stone, and has since returned to Florida feeling much healthier and no longer restricted by his weight.

Brendan, who is married with two daughters, joined British Military Fitness in August 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. He commented: “When I was younger, I played football, rugby and American football and was exercising six days a week. However, I got injured when I was 25 and never regained my fitness levels; finally retiring from sports in 2000 aged 30. By 2012, from lack of exercise and quite an unhealthy diet, my weight had ballooned to 23 stone. When I was unable to fit on the ride in Florida due to the safety restraints not fitting, I was mortified, particularly for my daughters and knew I had to get fit.”

Brendan, who works as an engineer, commented: “I decided to join the gym, but with no one there to motivate me, I found it so dull and too easy to pack it in and leave. I was barely losing weight and I needed something to take me to the next level. Someone at work mentioned BMF sessions so I decided I had nothing to lose and went to a free trial session and loved it. As soon as I joined, I started losing weight properly, especially as I get motivation not only from Kev, my instructor, but from all my fellow BMF’ers – everyone supports each other and no one gets left behind – it is a great feeling.”

“The best thing about BMF is that you are pushed to your limits but supported all the way. Also, no two classes are ever the same and the variety makes it fun as you never know what to expect when you turn up.”

Brendan trains with British Military Fitness twice a week, and credits it with changing his life. He explains, “before joining BMF I would get knackered from simple tasks like running a bath but it has taken me to fitness levels I thought I would never achieve again – I have even started taking on fitness challenges. I am running my first half marathon in September and have done several 10k runs – something I could not have imagined two years ago!”

“After being unable to go on the ride in Florida because of my weight, I promised myself I would get onto that ride the following year. And thanks to BMF I did – I managed to go on them all! I would say I owe my wellbeing to BMF and I think the decision to attend the classes has given my family many more years with me and I’ve never felt better.”
