“Exercise saved me from a heart attack”, says 63-year-old fitness enthusiast

Tony Jarvis is a 63-year-old father of three and grandfather of five from Leicester. In 2011, despite leading an active life, Tony was suffering from angina – chest pains often associated with coronary heart disease. His daughters, concerned for his health, convinced him to attend a session with BMF.

Misinformed by his children, Tony put on a red bib and headed off to a BMF session at his local park, Victoria Park. Upon arrival, it dawned on him that red bibs were actually for the intermediate level of BMF. Undeterred, the 63-year-old Printing Works Operative completed the session, notwithstanding a few strains along the way.

At the time, Tony was still playing squash and football, and had recently added a little indoor circuit training to his weekly regime, but nothing prepared him for the unique, unrivalled atmosphere of BMF.

He commented: “Before my first class I was apprehensive about BMF, but from day one, I just loved it. After completing my first few sessions – which I admit were a bit of a struggle – I noticed my fitness, strength, and mental endurance all begin to improve. Since then it’s just been onwards and upwards and I feel great.”

Tony’s energy is infectious. His attitude towards health and exercise is an example to follow for all over 50s feeling a little out of shape or suffering from fitness-related illness. Thanks to his hard work at BMF, Tony has recovered from his angina and now looks forward to pushing himself to the next level.

He continued: “Exercise certainly saved me from a potential heart attack from angina, even though I’ve always been someone who enjoys keeping fit and healthy. My version of Spock’s ‘live long and prosper’ is ‘exercise and see your grandchildren!

“Now I’m just looking forward to achieving my goal of green bib (highest level of BMF) by 70 and spending more time with the little ones!”

With science proving that you’re more likely to stick to group exercise than going it alone, Tony also remarked on the welcoming BMF environment:

“Unlike any other sports I’ve participated in, for me, BMF has a seriously broad appeal. Whatever your size, age, gender or fitness level, it’s a total mind and body workout, outdoor and with professional instruction. The people I have met during my four years have been an absolute pleasure to train alongside, and group support is everywhere – you are made to feel very welcome.”
