Weight loss rather than weight training

Paul Beard’s weight had crept up to just over 20 stone by the time he reached his 40s. He decided to do something about it when a friend, who was the same age as him, had a stroke. They joined a slimming club together and Paul lost almost four stone. Then he decided that as well as weight loss, he wanted to get fitter and stronger too and found our outdoor fitness classes in March this year. He’s now shed five stone in total and completed his first Tough Mudder obstacle course race.

Weight Loss Paul after training with BMF, and before.

The funeral director from Welwyn, who’s married with three children, had been into weight training in his 20s but says he then “got lazy” and had to stop working out because of a hernia.

Now Paul goes to BMF classes at least three times a week. His weight loss changes have been huge - he lost 10 inches from his waist, three from his neck and six from his chest. He’s also gained friends, confidence and has been able to talk about his depression for the first time in years.

Paul, who will be 43 this month, said: “I was outside the newsagents with my kids one day when I saw the BMF van across the car park. I looked up the organisation online and then went along one day to chat to the instructors to find out more. I went to my first class on the Saturday and signed up as a member there and then. Now I feel fitter and stronger than ever. Some of the things I can do now I just wouldn't have believed and it feels like my shape is changing week by week.

“I joined a gym when I was younger and got too big too quickly. I became addicted to weight training. I didn't want to go back to that and BMF is 100 per cent better. I miss it now if I can’t go because I’m on call or if we’re going to a wedding. Those are the only reasons I don’t go! I love the whole thing but the best thing about BMF is that everyone helps and motivates you. No one is judging you.

“If you’re aching a bit, the instructors will adjust the exercises for you. Being out in the open is great and the cool downs at the end are brilliant. I find it a buzz. You don’t realise how hard you’re working because of the variety. If you pair up with a green bib, they’ll push you and if you pair up with a blue bib, you’ll encourage them.

“It's much more than just weight loss and fitness though. It’s given me more confidence in myself. I used to stay in my car until the last minute but now I’m in the middle of it all, talking to all the other members before the class starts. I used to feel like everyone was looking at me but now I feel that maybe I’m inspiring them. For the first time in four years, I’ve also been able to talk about my depression to one of the instructors. That was a big step.”

BMF Stevenage Park Manager, Anthony Thompson, said: “Since joining BMF I have watched Paul’s fitness improve. His determination and dedication to improve his lifestyle is inspirational and I’m glad British Military Fitness has been part of it.”
