Top 10 Tips for your 1st Spartan Race

#1 Get used to being comfortable with being uncomfortable

Completing the world’s best obstacle race is no mean feat! Train in all weathers, throw some press ups and squats into your training run, get muddy, get wet, get uncomfortable, it will help you loads on race day.

#2 Ensure you're doing Spartan-appropriate training

During a Spartan Race your body is challenged differently to how it would for an ordinary run, so the gym treadmill won't cut it for training. Instead, train outdoors, combining things like body weight exercises and carries with running to ensure you're event ready.

#3 Nothing new on the day 

Ok, it’s a week before your first Spartan Race, you’ve just bought a new compression top; test it out before race day to ensure its comfortable, this goes for everything; trail shoes, shorts, socks and nutrition as well, nobody likes gut problems before a rope climb!

#4 Compose yourself…

When you approach an obstacle on race day, walk to it rather than run; especially in the latter half of the race. This will be give you time to compose, judge and watch how best (or not!) to get over, through, carry or throw it! The right mind set and game plan may well save you that 30 burpee penalty (see below…)

#5 Master that burpee

As hinted at in point 2, whether it be on the spear throw or Mount Olympus, those burpees may well make an appearance on race day… embrace them! If you're struggling with motivation to bash out 30 burpees on your own, make sure you're attending regular BMF classes and you'll have done triple that in no time!

#6 Enjoy the experience and smile at the marshals  

Running a Spartan Race is an awesome experience, take the time out to enjoy every mile and obstacle, engage with the marshals, they love a high five and a muddy hug!

#7 Help your fellow Spartan!

You’re in this together, if a fellow Spartan needs a hand over a wall or some encouragement over the cargo help, help them out and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it! Live by the Spartan warrior ethos and never leave a fallen comrade behind.

#8 AROO yourself!

You’ve just completed your first Spartan Race, congratulations! Now go enjoy that beer (if you like!) wear that race t-shirt and proudly produce that medal on Monday when your co-workers or fellow BMF members ask you what you did at the weekend!
