No one goes into a relationship thinking it’s going to be abusive. When Vicky was pinned to the bed with his hands around her neck she realised enough was enough.

Battling anxiety and fear, she turned to BMF to improve her fitness and confidence.

Video: Vicky shares her story of overcoming low confidence following her experience of domestic abuse through group exercise with British Military Fitness.

In many cases, self-esteem and domestic violence go hand in hand. Low self-esteem can be brought on by a variety of factors and can be a serious issue for women and men who are victims of domestic violence.

Exercise is a powerful way of building self-esteem. It’s a natural mood lifter, it provides a sense of accomplishment and it helps you to look and feel better about yourself. While it’s good for everyone, it’s particularly beneficial if you have a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you get moving. However, it can be challenging to start or maintain exercise especially when you don’t like exercise, don’t feel like it, you’re anxious, depressed, tired or busy. That's where signing up to a group class can really make the difference. Not only will you be supported and encouraged by those around you, but you'll also build a sense of belonging within the group.

What's more, the great outdoors is a natural mood-enhancer so British Military Fitness ticks several boxes in one go! Keen to re-build her confidence and self-esteem, Vicky turned to British Military Fitness where, supported by those around her, her confidence grew and grew. Not only this but a side-effect of the fitness classes was a 2 stone weight loss which boosted her confidence further!
