A team of friends from Manchester, which goes by the name of The Major Muppets, has raised over £1,600 for Mind and Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Care by competing in seven 10km Major Series obstacle course races across the UK, running, swimming and crawling a total of 490km (304miles).

The Major Muppets, consisting of Phil Armitage, Kate Donnellon, Jay Armitage, Chris Armitt, Chloe Mower, Chris Blower and Richard Mclarnon, decided to challenge themselves to run all seven 2014 Major Series events and, in doing so, raise money for three charities – Mind, Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Care. The team, which all attends British Military Fitness (BMF) sessions in Platts Field, raised £1,168 for Mind and £481 for Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Care.

The Major Series events, which are award winning obstacle races organised by BMF every year in four different locations around the UK, including Leeds, Kent and, for the first time this year, Scotland. Participants are able to run either a 5km or 10km course, which includes mud crawling, tyre walls, ice crawls, stench trenches and a rifle range obstacle.

Phil Armitage, a member of the Major Muppets, commented: “Overall the Major Series events were great fun and doing them as a team made them even more enjoyable. We wanted to raise as much as we could for charities we could relate to. Mind is a cause close to my heart, due to the charity aiding my uncle, who suffered with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after a serious accident, and we all know someone who has been affected by cancer in some way, so we are really happy to be able to give back to the charities.”

Graham O’Brien, North Manchester Territory Manager of British Military Fitness commented: “I want to give a massive congratulations to the Major Muppets for completing all seven of the Major Series events, which is by no means an easy feat, as well as for managing to raise so much for charity. It is always great to hear how people are using their BMF training for such worthy causes.”
