The Fuddy Muckers from BMF in Dundee

These seven smiling BMF blues are taking part in the "Pretty Muddy Race for Life" obstacle course at Camperdown Park in Dundee next month. They’ll be raising money for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and give credit to BMF for giving them the training and the confidence to take part in the event on the 17th June 2017.

Dr Sharon King, Josie Hall, Katie MacDonald, Sarah Barnes, Heather Milne, Dr Fiona Tulloch and Dr Laura Fulford met one another through British Military Fitness in Dundee run by Park Manager Gary Mulholland. Half the group only joined BMF at the beginning of this year.

Sharon, who is a researcher at the University of Dundee, said: “Our BMF class kindly chose our team name for us – The Fuddy Muckers. We’ll be joining around 25 doctors, scientists and researchers from the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre with the aim of raising more than £3000 between us. We chose to raise money for CRUK as this charity is a primary funder for the cancer research that is carried out at our local hospital, Ninewells.

“Some of us did it last year but our team is back stronger and larger, so our goal is to do better than we did last year and increase the amount that we raised for Cancer Research UK.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and it is through kind donations that researchers can focus in on understanding the mechanisms of how this disease arises so that better treatments and cures can be discovered.

“Cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years and consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further.”

Dr Fiona Tulloch, a scientist at the University of St Andrews, joined the BMF team in January 2017. She said “It's through the fun and varied training that we receive from Gary, James and Andy that we have built the confidence to enter into this run. They ensure that they push us during every session. Each class is fun but challenging and never the same from running up hills in the parks to bear crawling on a sandy beach. Everyone is so friendly and motivational at BMF class – there is a real sense of camaraderie. Here’s hoping that this first 5k is the start of many other runs together.”
